Dalhousie Students Finish 5th at Rotman International Trading Competition

February 19, 2005

Dalhousie University students participated in the 2nd annual Rotman International Trading Competition hosted by University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. The team of four students placed 5th out of 24 of the top North American schools.

This competition is a unique 2-day invitational event which took place in Toronto. During the competition students representing their schools participated in teams of four and competed against each other in multiple events specifically designed to allow students an opportunity to put their finance knowledge, combined with a bit of street smarts, to use.

Each team was given historical information regarding three fictitious companies a few weeks before the competition. They had to analyze this data and build models used to forecast how the company would do for the next year. During the competition, students had to react to news releases that came out and alter their initial estimates of the companies’ performances. The amount of money each team earned and how close the analysts’ estimates were to the company’s realized earnings determined the total of the cash prizes awarded.

The Dalhousie team (pictured) consisted of Derek Barnick, Julie Breau, James Morrison and Adam Spencer. This mainly undergraduate team competed extremely well at this graduate-level competition.

Dalhousie’s School of Business Administration continues to attract top students who are given the opportunity to develop and pursue their studies in finance and related areas.
