Brooks, M. R., Hodgson, J. R. F. & Frost, J. D. (2006), Short sea shipping on the east coast of North America: An analysis of opportunities and issues, Halifax: Dalhousie University. (Project ACG-TPMI-AH08, Transport Canada).

This report is intended to advance the federal government’s appreciation of the potential for short sea shipping activities on the East Coast of Canada and the United States. While the research is not definitive in its findings, it evaluates shipping demand both generally and more specifically respecting the requirements of cargo interests. The report identifies areas where potential operators need to undertake further investigation regarding investment decisions. Further, the report provides indepth analysis of the challenge of finding business opportunities with potential, and outlines impediments that lie within the purview of the federal government to address and rectify.

Funding for this research was provided by the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program of Transport Canada, the Halifax Port Authority, and the Centre for International Business Studies in the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University.
